Common Signs and Symptoms of Piles you should be aware of


In piles (hemorrhoids), there is an unbearable pain in the anal region. While many dismiss changes in bowel movements and anal pain as stomach upset or constipation.

Here are some common signs and symptoms of piles you should no ignore.

Blood in stools: It can be a key sign of piles but can also indicate anal fissures, inflammatory bowel disease or stomach cancer. However, if you have blood stools then consult your doctor immediately to know if it is caused due to piles or hemorrhoids and get it treated at the earliest.

Anal pain and discomfort: Anal pain and discomfort are a common sign of piles. It is also characterized by brief episodes of rectal pain. As colonoscopy and MRI may not effective in detection, it is important to consult a gastroenterologist to know the exact cause of the condition as it can also be due to fissures or fistula.

Anal itching: There can be swelling around the anal region and the skin can itch. You need to go for anal pathology if the problem persists in the anal canal or causes severe anal itching. It could be a form of infection or fissure.

Pain during bowel movements: If you suffer from piles, you might experience an increased pressure on the blood vessels of the rectum, which leads to pain during bowel movements. Hence, it is not just constipation or irritable bowel syndrome, piles are also characterized by pain in the lower abdomen with difficulty in bowel movements.

Swelling or a lump near the anus: While most people feel that swelling or appearance of a lump near the anus might signify cancer, Dr. Sandil says that cancer is not common in the anal area. However, it could be a sign of piles or infection in the anal area.
